Former Republican will vote straight Democrat
Published November 01. 2020 12:01AM
Many candidates, especially Republicans, say they are running because they want to make sure to “run government like a business!” Businesses are run for the profit of investors, not the public interest. Near-term profits tend to come first, so they tend to resist taxes, employee benefits, environmental mitigation, health care, regulatory oversight, and public safety. It is all about survival of the fittest, competition, and personal gain.
President Trump's tax returns, his personal history, and his public leadership shine a light on how his businesses are run: frequent bankruptcies, hiring illegals, bullying, tax fraud, legal evasion, personal aggrandizement. New Yorkers who knew him are not surprised that his government administration has been on such a roller-coaster ride, with huge profits for the wealthy, and so much misery for the “little guy.”
The next time a candidate says they want to run government "like a business," vote instead for the one who believes in an efficient and compassionate government that provides more support for health care and education, long-term economic and environmental sustainability, and justice for all.
This year, my votes will be for Democrats, across the board.

Comparing Carney and Rubino on the Environment
OCTOBER 31, 2020
In response to Mr. Noel Bishop’s endorsement of Devin Carney as per his letter to the editor on Oct. 29: Mr. Bishop fails to acknowledge that Carney is a member of the party that denies climate change, mistrusts science, and works to viciously undo legislation that preserves and protects wildlife and conservation sites.
He cites some of Carney’s recognitions in the environmental and land preservation space, but they are not the result of a proactive agenda, nor one that is particularly informed by the biggest threat to our nice beach/boating/fishing lifestyles: Climate change.
Carney’s opponent, Dave Rubino, on the other hand, is endorsed by The Sierra Club. He also has skin the game—he has kids who play in our waters, experience our marine life, explore our marshes and forests. He will advocate for legislation mandating climate change education in public schools (it is right now only “encouraged” but is not part of the required curriculum).
Being buddies with the boating community of Westbrook—and likely those who polluted our waters during a couple of maritime “Trump trains” this fall—hardly makes the writer’s candidate an environmental champion. And speaking of champions, what does Mr. Carney champion in general? The status quo. And, perhaps, a system that rewards certain people for having a well-known surname. Rubino currently works as a human rights attorney—a champion for those who need a voice, someone to stand up and step up. With vigor and wisdom and a personal investment in the issues.
I urge voters in the 23rd District to review Rubino’s positions on issues that we face as a community and to consider the incredible possibilities that could happen with a change of leadership.

Don’t Enable Trump, Vote Rubino
OCTOBER 29, 2020
As a CNN television correspondent for “Moneyline with Lou Dobbs,” I was four blocks away from the North Tower of the World Trade Center when it collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001. In that terrorist attack, it was the second tower to go down and the tragedy immediately struck me as the Pearl Harbor of my lifetime as nearly 3,000 people died.
Now, with 1,000 people dying nearly every day, we have a 9/11 scale fatal event every three days due in large part to the monumental mishandling of the pandemic by Donald Trump and Republican elected officials everywhere. Many Republican governors and legislators resist masks and other health measures designed to protect all of us. Look at the infection rates under Republican administrations. Without a doubt, every one of the incumbent Republicans needs to be voted out since their policies may make us all sick.
Under ordinary circumstances, one might be able to make the argument that State Rep. Devin Carney deserves another term in office. Sadly, these are anything but normal times.
In spite of his claim that he does not appreciate Donald Trump’s behavior, the real test for Carney is in what he does in Hartford, where he falls in line with steadfast Republican support for policies that are enabling Donald Trump’s destruction of democracy.
As Trump, the head of the Republican party, attacks the rule of law, denigrates truth in science, sows divisiveness and puts the health of the entire nation at risk, what we have left is a Republican Party that has sacrificed its moral authority and its principles on the national, state and local level.
So, starting here in Lyme, my family and I can not support Devin Carney, a sheep cloaked in the murderous health policies of Donald Trump and the Republican Party. We will be voting for Dave Rubino, his Democratic opponent, who has been consistently outspoken about the Trump administration and about the Republican agenda in Hartford.
This year, we are voting the straight Democratic ticket. If the Republican Party ever retrieves its soul, maybe we will consider voting for some of its candidates. For now, there is no merit to their positions on the most important life-and-death issues.

He wants to represent you and the rest of the 23rd District! Dave is committed to competent management of the COVID-19 pandemic. He will work to protect our vulnerable and ensure adequate supplies for healthcare workers; make certain that schools are equipped to provide educational opportunities to students during the pandemic, that staff and students are protected, and parents are supported.
He believes that we need a proactive approach to restoring the economy during and after the pandemic. He will support funding for small business recovery, promote the creation of jobs, as well as technological training, and will take appropriate measures to boost travel and tourism in coastal towns. Your vote for Dave Rubino is a vote for leadership that we all can count on.

Rubino a “Stalwart Champion of Justice for All”OCTOBER 22, 2020
I am writing to urge voters to join me in electing Dave Rubino for State Rep. for the 23rd district. Dave will continue to be a stalwart champion of justice for all, and for the environment. He also brings to the table a broader perspective and fresh ideas after having experienced a range of cultures and approaches to complex issues.
Especially in these challenging times, we need the kind of creative, collaborative, dynamic leadership Dave Rubino will give us. Rubino for the 23rd!

Rubino a ‘Champion for the Downtrodden,’ Will Stand Up for Women
OCTOBER 29, 2020
There are some people who just bring out the best in everyone. They can work with anyone, they do what they say they will and they genuinely care. David Rubino is one of those people. He cares about us, listens to us. More than that. He cares about our community and wants to work to make it the best it can be, for us. He is also someone who is a fierce advocate for what he sets his mind to.
He has been a champion for the downtrodden and he has shown up for the vulnerable, again and again. His work as a human rights, civil rights and women’s rights attorney has been his career, but it is also just who he is. He will bring his thoughtful nature and his strength in communicating to the capitol. He has experience that matters when it comes to negotiating and reaching out to people, so that real, impactful change can be made where we need it most.
Dave is who we need in Hartford, someone who will listen to us and think about our concerns when making decisions – not his political party. Someone who will do what his campaign motto says: Stand Up. He will Stand Up for women by working for equal pay for equal work, strengthening domestic violence laws, ending human trafficking in our state and doing his part to ensure affordable healthcare in our district and our state.
Dave Rubino has my vote and he deserves yours too.

Vote Rubino to ‘Address the Big Issues’
OCTOBER 26, 2020
I’m writing to endorse Dave Rubino for Democratic State Representative in the 23rd District.
I’m endorsing Dave because I care about Connecticut: enough in-fighting about gas taxes. Let’s address the big issues. The federal government is attacking our healthcare, our tax base, and women’s reproductive rights. Connecticut can put up a firewall to protect and enhance those rights in our state, but we need someone with Dave’s experience to do that.
Dave is a once-in-a-generation candidate, with a breadth of knowledge and work experience that few state candidates have been able to claim. He also has strong roots in our communities through his business and his family.
This will continue to be a tough year. I am voting for Dave because he’ll stand up for us in Hartford.

Marx right candidate for current challenges

The editorial board faced a difficult choice in assessing the race for state senator in the 20th District, which includes The Day’s host community of New London. Incumbent Republican Sen. Paul Formica is seeking a fourth term in the district that also includes East Lyme, Waterford, Montville, Salem, Old Saybrook, Old Lyme and Bozrah. In his three previous campaigns he has earned our endorsement. For a second straight election he faces Martha Marx, chair of the Democratic Town Committee in New London and a registered nurse for 30 years. She is a visiting nurse. Formica, 67, who started the family business, Flanders Fish Market in East Lyme, is a statesman, measured in his responses, with a detached style that can at times come off as aloofness. He approaches policy from the businessperson’s perspective. In contrast, Marx, 57, is passionate and emotional in arguing for the issues she sets as her highest priorities — access to health care, assuring a living wage, providing affordable housing and addressing racial inequality.
In past terms, Formica’s work to keep Millstone Power Station operating, support for development of an offshore wind-power industry, and backing structural changes to control spending were among his notable achievements.
Since his 2018 election, however, Senator Formica has marched in lockstep with Republican leadership, when the needs of his district demanded that he at times strike a different path. Republican lawmakers, for example, chose the politically easy option in flatly opposing electronic tolling. But if there is a district that needs the investment in transportation that toll revenues would provide, it is the 20th. New London is a transportation hub. And the narrow, twisting section of Interstate 95 through East Lyme — the scene of the highest fatality rates in the state — must be overhauled for safety.
Of course tolls are unpopular, but they make sense, and would force the millions of out-of-state drivers who travel through our state to contribute to highway upkeep and improvements. Instead of showing the political courage to back this pragmatic solution, Formica aligned with a convoluted and fiscally perilous plan pushed by the Republican minority leader, Sen. Len Fasano (who, we note, is not seeking re-election).
That plan would have used the budget surplus to pay down pension debt, then used those “savings” — the pension fund would have still been grossly underfunded — to pay for transportation needs and leverage federal dollars. Thank goodness that idea was rejected. It would have squandered the surplus now needed to help the state get through the pandemic crisis.
Formica’s opposition to the stepped increases in the minimum wage passed by the Democratic legislature is understandable from his pro-business perspective. But what of the needs of the many people in New London, with its per capita income of $25,000, who depend on the minimum wage?
In the recent special session, Formica talked with uncharacteristic emotion about the different treatment Black Americans face in police encounters — more likely to be pulled over, more likely for the encounter to end badly. But rather than support a police accountability bill that he acknowledged was mostly good, Formica aligned, again, with all fellow Republicans in voting “no.”
This was a bill strongly backed not only in New London, but throughout much of the 20th District, where racially diverse groups of demonstrators had demanded police reforms. Formica had an explanation — his opposition to limiting the immunity now protecting police from litigation for misconduct — but he could have supported the bill while noting his disapproval to that provision, promising to work to amend it if re-elected.
Even on his fiscal policy, his seeming strength, Formica disappointed. As the ranking member of the Appropriations Committee, the senator bought into the Republican strategy to offer no alternative budget proposal, a political calculation to let Democrats own it without having to defend a Republican plan.
Marx will fight for the interests of New London in a way the incumbent has not — working to protect the minimum wage step increases and fighting for the city to get a fair host community agreement before development on the offshore wind-power hub at State Pier begins.
She recognizes a need for toll revenues to improve the transportation infrastructure, will bring a nurse’s perspective to addressing the pandemic and its aftermath, and won’t shirk from addressing racial disparities.
These are the issues of our time.
Yet Marx’s seemingly slavish support of organized labor, her tone deafness about the challenges that businesses face in this state, and her eagerness to turn to higher taxes, give pause. If elected, she needs to listen to the job creators in her district.
Marx, at this juncture in history, brings more positives to representing her community and gets our editorial endorsement.

Rubino Brings ‘Fresh Perspective,’ Right Kind of Experience
OCTOBER 28, 2020
I am writing in strong support of Dave Rubino for State Representative for Connecticut’s 23rd District, which includes the towns of Old Lyme, Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook. Dave will bring a unique background and a fresh perspective to the work he will do on our behalf in Hartford. He is an attorney and small business owner in Old Lyme with a lengthy career in promoting democracy in other nations. This is the kind of experience the constituents in the 23rd District need to navigate the challenges of a state suffering through a pandemic and the aftermath of these circumstances.
Like Dave, I also chose to live in Old Lyme and have been a resident of Old Lyme for 24 years. My entire career has been dedicated to supporting and advocating for public education and public school teachers. Dave is the clear choice for those who believe in maintaining strong policies to protect our education system and the teachers working our schools. He will protect the collective bargaining rights of teachers. He will ensure adequate funding for our schools. He will protect teacher pensions. He will co-sponsor legislation to address student trauma and promote social-emotional policies and funding.
More globally, Dave will work to strengthen our economy. He will work to attract small business owners by proposing that the state invest in a marketing campaign to improve the economic future in Connecticut. Similarly, he will work to improve policies and funding to promote travel and tourism, which is so critical to this region.
Please join me in voting for Dave on November 3rd. The residents of the 23rd District deserve a legislator who is committed to these principles.

Rubino a ‘Leader Who is Not Afraid to Tackle the Difficult Issues of our Times’
OCTOBER 28, 2020
Dave Rubino is a newcomer to the 23rd District, but he brings an extraordinary range of experience as a human rights attorney who has committed his life to the values and principles of democracy. As an attorney, his work abroad focused on fair election process, legislative reforms, anti-corruption policies, human trafficking, and gender inequality. These experiences have enriched his view of the world and reinforced his commitment to improve the quality of life for others through the legislative process. He would be a tremendous asset in the Connecticut General Assembly!
Let’s face it. It takes guts to relocate your family, start a new business, become a respected leader in your community, and challenge a third term incumbent for an assembly seat! That is exactly why Dave Rubino is my choice for state representative. He is a leader who is not afraid to tackle the difficult issues of our times, whether they be healthcare, the climate crisis, women’s rights, racial injustice, or the economic wellbeing of our state. In Dave Rubino, we have a candidate who is astute, educated, forward thinking, and honest. We can count on him to approach the legislative process with a full grasp of the issues, and to write effective legislation, not just vote for it.
Dave Rubino has my vote for state representative. He will bring strong leadership and a depth of experience to the 23rd District.

Letter to the Editor: Rubino’s ‘Impressive and Diverse’ Experience Would Bring ‘Sophisticated Insight’ to State Rep. Position
October 23, 2020
To the Editor:
An oft-repeated family mantra is “Think globally, act locally.” This is one reason I, an octogenarian, have already voted for Dave Rubino, State Representative Candidate, District 23.This young man impresses me as a solid citizen, and Old Lyme is lucky that he and his family decided to make our town his home after an impressive and diverse career as a corporate lawyer, and, as an international human rights lawyer. He brings to the position of State Representative, the kind of sophisticated insight needed for fighting COVID, and its insidious progression in healthcare, how to open schools safely, and how to balance the need to reignite our economy by helping small business owners to reopen and convince the public to use sensible preventive health measures by wearing masks, refrain from large gatherings (especially as cold weather will preclude outdoor events), and wash hands. Regardless of your party affiliation, I encourage you to vote for Dave. His experience in working on women’s rights, climate change, voting rights, racial justice is of the utmost importance as we go into 2021.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Dave. He is a good listener, and a thoughtful responder. I see Dave Rubino as a welcome addition to the State Assembly. We need potential leaders like him!
Sincerely,
Alison C. Mitchell,

Rubino well prepared for coming challenges
October 25. 2020 12:01AM
I am writing in support of Dave Rubino for state representative. The shoreline has an unparalleled need for new approaches and proactive leadership to help us navigate the next couple of years. We face a shoreline economy approaching recession, with small business owners and service workers shouldering the heaviest load. We face an intrepid coronavirus heading toward a fall/winter spike of new cases. These spikes may be quite different than we saw in the spring. The U.S. Supreme Court is likely to remove legal protections we currently value. These rights are likely to lose their federal standing and be returned to state government to be considered afresh.
Whatever the outcome on Nov. 3, much will be left to state and local actions. Our elected representatives must try new approaches and inspire continued cooperation. We need to ensure the solutions help us all rise together, rather than exacerbate income inequality.
Dave Rubino’s life has been on a road less traveled, pushing for innovative solutions and human welfare in some difficult places in the world. These experiences have equipped Dave to think out of the box. He is a lawyer, which will assist him as he works to turn these ideas into effective legislation.

Letter to the Editor: Vote Rubino to Gain a Knowledgeable, Effective State Rep., Stop Trump’s Party Strengthening in CT
October 14, 2020
To the Editor:
The Hartford Courant recently reported, “As the Republican National Committee recruits a volunteer army to monitor voting machines, check voter IDs and possibly issue challenges in battleground states, the Connecticut GOP is actively growing its own Election Day operation. . . Connecticut Republican Party chairman J.R. Romano wrote in an email to party members. ‘JOIN the EDO [Election Day Operation] Army For Trump NOW. . .’”
Donald Trump has made the Connecticut Republican Party his own. On November 3 we will vote to fill the 23rd House District seat with either Republican Devin Carney or Democrat Dave Rubino.
Dave has practiced law for 24 years, most of that overseas addressing problems caused by bad government. His office is in Old Lyme. Dave’s values could not be more different from those of Trump’s GOP, and he would make an extremely effective state representative. Dave’s career has enabled him to become expert at understanding the law, drafting it, and persuasively arguing his positions.
Dave sits on Old Lyme’s Economic Development Commission. He is fully aware of our area’s economic condition and how the state can help us. He will stand up for universal voting rights, a strong safety net, health care for all, racial justice, a reasonable minimum wage, student debt relief, affordable housing, and environmental reform. Dave’s website–www.rubino2020.com—provides more information.
If you don’t want Trump’s party to gain strength in Connecticut, please vote for Dave on November 3.
Sincerely,
Bennett Bernblum,

Rubino will be a better advocate for 23rd district
Published October 14. 2020 5:18PM
I have always believed that the best way to make a decision is with as much information as possible. The more perspectives you gather, the more you appreciate a holistic view of what you are trying to decide; the better you can evaluate the best way to decide; and the more fully you are able to view how that action will impact people. Nothing happens in a vacuum, and I believe that trying to understand the effects of your actions on the world you live in is a responsibility we should all aspire to.
For that reason, I am supporting Dave Rubino for state representative. Issues that are on my mind this election cycle are the right to affordable health insurance, increased educational funding and gender equality. Given Devin Carney’s voting record, I have faith that Dave Rubino will be a better advocate for these issues. Transparency, compassion, and understanding are ideals and most importantly actions and achievements in Dave’s work and life. I know that he will stand up for us, and for all those who need and want just representation.

Women Have a Lot to Gain From Democrats Like Dave Rubino
OCTOBER 13, 2020
Recently, I had the good fortune of hearing Dave Rubino speak at the Westbrook town green. Dave is the Democratic candidate for the 23rd Congressional District in Connecticut, or Old Saybrook, Old Lyme, Lyme, and the shore community of Westbrook.
I left the green feeling inspired and energized. Dave supports families, women’s rights, health care for all, and the sanctity of the democratic voting process.
Dave is exactly the type of leader we need right now, and we need to make that happen with our votes. Women, in particular, have a lot to gain from Democrats like Dave being elected to public office. We need to stand behind the only political party that sees women as equal members of society, and that understands the value of democracy, rule of law, good governance, honesty, and hope for the future.
Vote for Dave in the 23rd District, and vote for Democrats in every election—local, state, and national.

Rubino would bring right values to 23rd District job
Published October 09. 2020 6:05PM
On November 3, Connecticut’s 23rd House District will have the rare opportunity to elect a truly extraordinary public servant. Dave Rubino has practiced law for 24 years, most of them overseas as a human rights lawyer. There he witnessed government at its worst and learned how to improve it. He and his family recently moved to Old Lyme and Dave now wants to use his experience, skills, and judgment for our benefit in Hartford. We must accept this offer.
President Donald Trump’s values have permeated and infected the Republican Party everywhere, including our state and the 23rd District. Dave’s values are antithetical to Trump’s. As a state representative, he will promote them in a powerful, persuasive, and respectful way. Through his law practice and service on Old Lyme’s Economic Development Commission, Dave has become intimately familiar with our region’s economic condition, and he is deeply committed to improving it. His other priorities include universal voting rights, a strong safety net, health care for all, racial justice, a reasonable minimum wage, student debt relief, affordable housing, and environmental reform.
Please visit www.rubino2020.com. Dave has a thoughtful “plan for everything.”
If you support Dave’s values, you could not elect a better advocate.

Letter to the Editor: Rubino’s Record, Broad Experience on Racial Justice, Voting Rights Both Impressive and Timely
October 9, 2020
To the Editor:
We are writing in support of Dave Rubino’s candidacy for State Representative in CT’s 23rd House District. His record and broad experience in matters of racial justice and voting rights are very impressive, and very timely.
Paraphrasing Thomas Paine: “These are the times that try our souls.”: institutionalized racism, voter suppression, gerrymandering, a pandemic that has made health and healthcare inequities in the United States apparent, and an elected executive hell-bent on undermining confidence in our elections.
Although those issues are ostensibly non-existent within the friendly confines of Old Lyme, CT; it is high time, nevertheless, that we build a cadre of elected officials who understand and are willing to act on these problems of national importance.
Sincerely,
Christina J. & Thomas D. Gotowka,

Letter to the Editor: Rubino Will Not Be Restricted by Party Lines in His Quest For Solutions That Benefit Local Community
September 30, 2020
To the Editor:
I am writing to encourage your readers to support and vote for Dave Rubino, the democratic candidate for the 23rd House District to represent Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook and Westbrook. I have had the opportunity to meet Dave, and talk with him about the issues that drive him as a person and a professional. Dave is a lawyer, with both business and human rights experience. His work on international voting rights demonstrated a shift in him professionally, putting his money where his mouth is, and fighting for what he valued.
While the national election for President captures the most attention, it is our local representatives that have the biggest impact on our lives on a day-to-day basis. David’s international legal work was bi-partisan in nature, working under both republican and democratic presidents. We need that willingness to work towards solutions – regardless of party – that bring progress to our community.
Dave has stepped up in recent years to volunteer and work in his community as a member of the Old Lyme Economic Development Commission. As our state and community work our way towards recovery and navigating the COVID crisis, we will need leaders willing to listen and represent the interests of our small businesses and navigating what is best for our community from a public health standpoint. As a member of the Old Saybrook Board of Selectman and chair of the
Economic Development Commission, I am confident in David’s ability to provide that for our community.
Sincerely,
Matt Pugliese,
Old Saybrook.

Voting Rubino, not the party of Trump
Published September 27. 2020 12:01AM
Despite being a lifelong Democrat, I have voted for both Republican and Democratic candidates. This was especially true in local and state elections, in which both parties fielded good candidates who cared deeply about their communities. But sadly, this has not been the case in many years.
Local Republicans have aligned themselves with the national party and President Donald Trump and have abandoned their focus on local issues. Just recently, Republicans in Connecticut signaled support for “QAnon” conspiracy theories, tried to limit access to voting, sued to keep students from wearing masks in school, and endorsed Trump, even as tapes showed that he lied to Americans about COVID-19, costing tens of thousands of lives.
Republicans do not even have a platform for this election. Their only remaining policy goal is to support Trump. How exactly does that serve Connecticut?
This is why I am looking forward to seeing my friend Dave Rubino in Hartford. He is the candidate for the Connecticut House of Representatives seat in the 23rd District (Old Lyme, Lyme, Old Saybrook, and part of Westbrook). He is a human rights attorney, a father, and a small-business owner. His thoughtfulness, knowledge, and compassion will represent us well.

Rubino understands small business
Updated September 25. 2020 8:23PM
David Rubino is a resident of Old Lyme, a local attorney, a small business owner, and a Democrat running for the Connecticut State House of Representatives in District 23, which includes Old Lyme, Lyme, Old Saybrook and part of Westbrook. He is a strong proponent of bipartisan collaboration in order to get things done in Hartford.
I believe that Dave is highly qualified to lead us in rebuilding our local economy. He understands that our area depends heavily on travel and tourism, and he will find a balance between attracting new visitors without jeopardizing public health.
He understands that small businesses can thrive on the Connecticut shoreline but that the keys to entrepreneurship and job creation are quality health care, smart investment in infrastructure, monitoring the impacts of these investments on the environment and community, reducing student loans and providing access to investment.
Dave’s experience as member on the Old Lyme Economic Development Council means he knows what businesses need to thrive and grow.
This Election Day is an extremely important day for our nation, but local elections matter too. I will be voting for Dave Rubino for state representative, and I encourage my neighbors to do the same.

Rubino is strong voice for the 23rd
Published September 27. 2020 12:01AM
Dave Rubino is the right person to represent Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook and Westbrook in Hartford. His legal experience in advocating for meaningful and balanced government policies are prerequisites for representing the 23rd.
Dave’s qualifications and extensive preparations for this office are articulated in his detailed descriptions of his positions (www.rubino2020.com). He will advocate for our seniors and growing families. His strong voice in support of our economic needs, job growth, affordable housing and protection of our natural resources needs to be heard. Rubino will lead where Carney has failed
Published September 27. 2020 12:01AM
With leadership failing at the highest levels, it becomes more critical to ensure that our local leaders are dedicated to fighting for the ideals we hold dear.
With reproductive rights, voting rights, equitable policing, and environmentalism embattled at the federal level, we depend on our state government to protect us. Unfortunately, we cannot always count on our local leaders to do that.
As a state representative for the 23rd District, Devin Carney has voted against measures for police accountability, immigrant protection, access to voting, and living wages for Connecticut families.
David Rubino, running for state representative against Carney, has proven that he is dedicated to the ideals he believes in: inclusive democracy and an equitable economy.
Foregoing a corporate law career, Dave chose to fight for human rights, women’s rights, voting rights, and legislative reform in the world’s most oppressive dictatorships. Dave is experienced, persistent, empathetic, and upright. He is the tough, experienced fighter we need for difficult times, and we are fortunate to have such a candidate.

District 20 needs Martha Marx in state Senate
Published September 14. 2020 4:48PM
As a campaign volunteer in my town of Old Lyme, I have become acquainted with Martha Marx in her bid for the Senate seat in the 20th District. I have been so impressed with her knowledge, her commitment, and her sense of values that I feel compelled to write and share my belief that it is time for a change.
The current COVID-19 crisis has shown us our health care infrastructure needs to be updated in a big way. Martha is a practicing nurse and it is clear we will need, in our state legislature, more trained health care professionals who understand science, making sure we are doing everything we can to keep our retirees and school children safe and avoid costly mistakes. When I heard the stories of how Martha took care of her patients so beautifully and under difficult circumstances, I had confidence she would be the voice of the people we want and need in our Senate.
I am convinced that Martha has both the energy and the compassion to lead us in our time of crisis. I encourage everyone to vote with your values and cast your ballot for Martha Marx for state Senate. I know I will.

Rubino Has Spent His Career Fighting for Democratic IdealsSEPTEMBER 19, 2020
In the midst of this very dark year, we in CT Congressional District 23 have the opportunity to vote for an inspiring candidate, Dave Rubino. Having met him and heard him speak, I know Dave represents my values. As a pediatric nurse practitioner, my passion is for health, good governance, and quality education for all children in our state. Dave’s opponent has a generally poor voting record on these issues. Furthermore, his opponent’s continued affiliation with the most corrupt administration in US history speaks volumes to his character.
Vote for Dave Rubino, who has spent his career fighting for the rule of law, human rights and democratic ideals, both here and abroad.

Time to dump Carney, back Rubino in 23rd
Published July 24. 2020 5:22PM
David Rubino’s op-ed was a great read, “23rd District voters should realize state, national races inextricably linked,” (July 14). He is right that Connecticut Republicans have been a disappointment. His opponent, Republican Devin Carney, is no different. Carney has had several terms in office and has not done much for the 23rd District (Old Saybrook, Old Lyme, Lyme, and the shore area of Westbrook).
Worse still, Carney has taken President Trump’s side in a number of important votes, despite wishing to appear like a moderate. Just take a quick look at his voting record. Carney voted against undocumented students, against a minimum wage increase, against paid family leave, against police reform, and in favor of ICE agents. A few bipartisan votes on popular issues does not change the fact that he votes for Trump’s America every chance he gets.
Carney is exactly the kind of politician we need to vote out of office right now if we really want to live in a stronger, healthier republic. Time for a change indeed.

Letter to the Editor: It’s Time for Change, Rubino Will Promote Climate of Equality as State Rep.
September 16, 2020
To the Editor:
I met Dave Rubino last year while working on a local election in Old Lyme. You learn a lot about a person when you are knocking on doors and phone calling together. I was immediately drawn to his passion to serve the people. As a Human Rights Lawyer, who has work in the US and overseas, he has a breadth of knowledge and experience about creating a climate of equality that we desperately need in our country right now.
I realize we don’t have term limits, but I only wish we did. I do believe that even the best intentioned politician loses their passion after a certain amount of time in office. Although well meaning, I do believe Devin Carney has lost his edge for serving the people and putting his heart into his responsibilities as the State Representative. It is through the ballot box that we can enact term limits and bring a fresh perspective to and energy for our district state representative. seat. The year 2020 is a time for change. I trust Dave Rubino and I plan to support him with my vote on Election Day. I hope you will join me!

23rd District voters should realize state, national races inextricably linked
by David Rubino
Published July 14. 2020 6:07PM
Samuel Adams once warned, “If ever a time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.”
It’s a dramatic sentiment, and I readily recognize that invoking it could be viewed as alarmist. Yet I invoke it regardless, unapologetic about its implications, because here is the truth: as a nation we are poised at the edge of a precipice. I know this because I have seen it before. For much of my career I have fought for the principles that make America great. I am a human rights lawyer, and I have been posted, with funding from both Republican and Democratic administrations, in foreign dictatorships, fighting for the rule of law, equality, freedom of speech, fair elections, and women’s rights. I take the promise of democracy seriously, so much so that I have dedicated my life to it.
If we choose to continue the current course of strong-armed rule — alienating our allies, empowering our enemies and sowing discord within our borders — we will surely lose our footing, and in so doing we risk taking with us the democratic principles that have guided our nation since its birth.
To some, the words of Adams may seem an antiquated reflection of a bygone era. To me, they are a summons. Defending democracy is what I do. It is what I have always done. By running for office, I am answering his call.
Of course, I’m not running for president. I’m running for state representative in the 23rd House District of Connecticut. I discuss national politics because the Trump presidency has made one thing abundantly clear: what is national is local, and what is local is national. The two are inextricably intertwined, and if we wish to see a better nation with a brighter future, we must begin in our own backyards.
Devin Carney, my incumbent opponent, is not a bad person. He is simply not the kind of person we need right now. We face crises on a host of levels: a pandemic, an economic downturn, a national movement for racial justice and a shaky position in the world. And each of these national issues has local implications. The most vulnerable among us are still confined to their homes. Should we not make accommodation for them by expanding absentee voting? Donald Trump says no. Connecticut Republicans, therefore, say no too. As recently as March of this year, the Republican transportation plan would have raided Connecticut’s Rainy Day Fund. Democrats insisted we hold on for a real rainy day. Good thing too: due to a failed national response to COVID-19, it’s not just raining, it’s pouring.
And now, in the midst of the most significant racial justice movement since the Civil Rights Era, local Republicans opportunistically flocked to join the popular cause mere months after voting against a police accountability bill.
To be sure, my opponent has not publicly endorsed Trump. Indeed, in 2016, he offered an equivocal non-endorsement. But four years have passed. It is important to know whether Mr. Carney still feels the same. If so, he should again publicly denounce the president along with the supporters who enable him.
Our towns do not operate in a vacuum separate from the rest of the country. Nationally and locally, Republican politicians have been far too eager to ignore the great crises of our time — from the pandemic to racial injustice to health care shortcomings to climate change. The pressure to toe the party line is unwavering.
The 23rd District needs someone who understands that the big picture matters at the local level, someone braced to push back against a federal government bent on punishing states like Connecticut that do not bow to its vision. Voters need someone who acknowledges the exceptional nature of this moment.
I am that person.
It is time for a change in the 23rd district.

What is a Democrat?
"Our opposition will never understand the Democratic Party. Our Party is--to the unpracticed eyes of the old Republican Tories--a mysterious contraption that usually seems to be moving in a thousand directions. What they don't know is what hurts them. For all that movement in the Democratic Party is caused by the internal combustion of creative ferment, of ideas, of people vigorously committed to the proposition that change and social progress are not only to be desired; they are necessities of twentieth-century America."
Hubert H. Humphrey
