​Susan Fogliano | Regional Board of Education

What inspired you to run for local office?
I previously served on the BOE from 1995 to 2011, and I wanted to return to community service in retirement.  I believe it is critical for us to maintain quality public education, with a common sense approach, and with dedication to fairness and transparency.

What do you hope to accomplish on the BOE?
I will serve as an effective Board member by putting students first, do my best with tax dollars given, with no political agenda.

What do you want voters to know about you?
I am interested first and foremost in serving the community of Old Lyme, and I believe in public education.  I am an experienced and trained Board member who will work with anyone who wants what is best for our town.

Qualifications for the Board of Education​​

• Social Studies Teacher at Daniel Hand HS in Madison for 2 years post undergraduate education.
• Elected to 4 consecutive terms (16 years) on the Region 18 Board of Education starting in 1995, served as Vice Chair and Chair.
• Served for 10 years on the Board of Directors of the local Regional Education Service Center.
• Served on the MacCurdy Salisbury Education Foundation for 10 years, interviewing scholarship applicants.
• Joined the Board of Trustees of the Community Music School in Centerbrook, where I served for three years prior to retirement.
• Currently serving on the Board of Trustees for the Ruth Ann Heller Music Foundation, as Chair of the Scholarship Committee.
• Additionally, in the years from 1997 through 2015, I worked off and on as a substitute teacher (all grade levels and subjects) in East Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Region 18.

​When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time?
I take care of my elderly mother. I enjoy reading and word games.  I also love boating and travel!

Where is your favorite place in Old Lyme?
Florence Griswold Museum is a gem!  It makes my heart happy when I am on their grounds!
